How and When to Use EarthMix® Garden Soils and Amendments in Your Garden

Here at EarthMix®, we know that the success of your garden starts from the ground up. Soil health is critical for bountiful vegetable gardens and beautiful ornamental gardens. When you use one of our living and organic soil blends, you are giving your plants the nutrients they need to reach their full potential.


The EarthMix® line of living soil blends and mixes are specifically designed to nourish plants without any added fertilizer. They are complete soil blends, made using proven recipes for consistent results. From container gardening to tree and shrub planting, there is an EarthMix® product that suits your needs.


Regular applications of organic compost like Magic™ mushroom compost, Veragra™ earthworm castings, and SuperNatural™ compost add critical biomass to the soil while enriching it with nutrient-dense organic matter.

EarthMix® also carries a broad line of sustainable soil amendments like sustainable Sustain™ coconut coir, pFines™ aged pine fines, and Enlighten™ expanded shale to amend and improve soil structure, drainage, and moisture retention year-round.

Garden™ Premium Topsoil Blend:

What is it? Garden™ is an organically enriched growing mix that is ready to use for direct planting, and can also be used to amend existing soil.


Use it for:

Any Garden | Raised Beds | Ornamental Gardens | Top-Dressing for Lawns

When should I use it? Use throughout the year for tree and shrub planting and raised beds. Works great as a garden soil that can be directly planted into for both vegetable and ornamental gardens.


Landscape™ Premium Soil Conditioner:

What is it? Landscape™ is a soil conditioner that can be used to improve drainage and make heavy clay soils more workable. The beneficial nutrients in Landscape™ means that it is does double the work—it improves soil structure and fertility.


Use it for:

Native Soils | Tree and Shrub Planting | Ornamental Gardens | General Top-Dressing

When should I use it? Use it to amend beds and other planting areas all year. Work into the ground before planting to improve soil structure. May be difficult to incorporate into the ground if ground is frozen.


Proganix-I™ Professional Indoor Grow Mix:

What is it? Proganix-I™ is a light indoor potting mix designed specifically for indoor plantings. It contains organic fertilizer and mycorrhizae fungi for vibrant houseplants all year long. Its light composition encourages root growth while allowing for adequate drainage.


Use it for:

Houseplants


When should I use it? Use it as a potting mix for indoor plants year-round. This mix also could be used for starting seeds.


Proganix-O™ Professional Outdoor Grow Mix:

What is it? Proganix-O™ is a nutrient-dense growing medium that is best used for outdoor container gardens. Its light composition allows for adequate drainage. Added organic fertilizer, calcium, humic acid, and mycorrhizae fungi helps potted arrangements to thrive all season long.


Use it for:

Outdoor Container Gardens | Raised Beds

When should I use it? Proganix-O™ can be used in outdoor potted and container gardens year-round. Simply refresh the soil each time you replant your container.


Supernatural™ Organic Compost:

What is it? Supernatural™ is EarthMix® Garden’s proprietary compost blend. This patiently aerated compost is made using a proven recipe for consistent results. It contains earthworm castings, composted pine fines, mushroom compost, poultry litter, mycorrhizae fungi, and humic acid.


Use it for:


Improving Native Soils | Top-Dressing for Vegetable Gardens | Top-Dressing for Lawns

When should I use it? Top dress ornamental and vegetable garden areas in January and February and again in July to enrich depleted soils. Apply even if the ground is frozen. Can be used as a soil amendment year-round.


Magic™ Mushroom Compost:

What is it? Magic™ is a shredded and sifted blend of manures from organic mushroom producers. Magic™ contains no additives, and naturally enhances and adds nutrients into garden soil.


Use it for:

Improving Native Soils | Top-Dressing Anywhere

When should I use it? Top dress ornamental and vegetable garden areas in January and February and again in July to enrich depleted soils. Apply even if the ground is frozen. Can be used as a soil amendment year-round.


Veragra™ EarthWorm Castings:

What is it? As an organic amendment, earthworm castings add beneficial nutrients and feed the microbiome of your soil. Sourced from organic vermiculture operations, Veragra™ earthworm castings have not been amended or stretched in any way.


Use it for:

When should I use it? Top dress ornamental and vegetable garden areas in January and February and again in July to enrich depleted soils. Apply even if the ground is frozen. Can be used as a soil amendment year-round.


Sustain™ Coconut Coir:

What is it? Coconut coir is a more environmentally sustainable amendment to peat moss. Extracted from the husk of coconuts during processing, it is a renewable and sustainable resource. Coir improves soil structure and moisture retention, and can be used in a variety of applications to lighten and improve soils.


Use it for:

Houseplants | Outdoor Container Gardens | Any Gardens


When should I use it? For use in containers and in the ground year-round. Improves water holding capacity of soils. However, it has no nutrient value by itself. Not recommended for use as a growing medium on its own.


Enlighten™ Expanded Shale:


What is it? EnLighten™ is kiln-fired, expanded shale. EnLighten™ can be added to soils to aerate and loosen soil structure. It can also serve as a barrier to deter voles and other underground pests.


Use it for:

Aerating Native Soils | Vole Deterrent | Water Gardens | Aerating Any Garden Bed


When should I use it? Add to all soils and potting mixes to improve drainage, moisture retention, and nutrient retention. Can be used all year. Could be difficult to use in the winter if the ground is frozen. May be used for potting water garden plants.


pFines™ Pine Fines


What is it? pFines™ (pronounced "fines") are finely shredded aged pine mulch. Pine fines are useful in mulching applications, but can also be worked into heavy clay soils to aerate and add organic matter to allow roots to grow and flourish.


Use it for:

When should I use it? Mulches can be used year-round as needed. Usually, existing beds are mulched in late winter before plants come out of dormancy.
